Fear! If you look closely, it’s usually at the root of all idols, problems, stress, anxiety and fights. We are afraid of losing something we care about. Something that we often care more about than God, but don’t realize it. The idols of control, love, children, money, future, spouses and other material items have a powerful hold over us. We are slaves to these fear and the idols it creates if don’t allow God into our lives to help us overcome them. Unfortunately, sometimes even when God comes to help us, we refuse His help out of fear and we remain in the bondage of fear.
We see this example in the story of the Israelites and Moses. The Israelites had been held as prisoners and made slaves for many years, but God heard their cry.
During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew. Exodus 2:23-25
In Exodus we read how God sent them Moses to lead them out of Egypt after the plagues, passover and through the Red Sea. . . . . What an adventure. Their cries had been heard and God was answering their prayers with escape and freedom. BUT, Bible commentators tell us that only 20% of the enslaved Israelites followed Moses out of Egypt. The rest stayed behind as slaves because of FEAR!
I know! Can you imagine? It’s easy to judge and wonder what they were thinking. How could they choose slavery over freedom? The answer is fear! Those who stayed chose what they knew, what was comfortable and what they were use to over the fear of the unknown and what the future held if they left. They were not able to trust God enough and break free from slavery because of the fear that felt of the unknown.
This relates so much to our lives today!!! Right now – in your life – what are you afraid of? What is keeping you from trusting God with this aspect of your life? Maybe it’s prior experiences, the desire for control, a lack of faith in God, anger, resentment . . . only you know what’s in your heart, but today I pray we are all able to overcome the fear that grips us and trust God with EVERY detail of our lives. Don’t let fear control you, change you, manipulate you or deceive you. Take God’s hand, trust His word, His plan and walk out of slavery today!
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.” So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, the Lord threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained. But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. Exodus 14:26-31
