New Wardrobe

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24

I went to visit a sick friend recently. I had a lot on my plate that day, but going by to visit her was a priority. In an effort to fit everything in, I skipped the shower, threw my hair up and put on my workout clothes. At least if I didn’t look my best – others would think the reason was because I had been working out, right?!

This experience reminded me that, when we become Christians, God calls us to “put off our old self” and “put on the new self”. Not, to cover up the bad stuff or the “old self” and pretend you have been made new, but to be made new in Him. What does that look like?

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. James 3:17-18

It’s authentic joy that brings us such delight we can’t help but throw off the workout clothes, jump in the shower and put on make-up! It’s a peace and contentment that has no worldly explanation. That makes no sense, but feels so right. It’s mercy and grace that flows from places that used to harbor only resentment and greed. It’s pure and good. It’s the Holy Spirit residing in us and shining for all to see.

We keep the “old self” off by staying in tune with God. By reading His Word. The Greek literal translation for “The Word” means face-to-face relationship. When we sit down with the Bible and read through it, we are face to face with our Heavenly Father. Isn’t that a beautiful image? Face-to-face with our Lord and Savior anytime we desire.

Father, create in us a strong desire to seek you daily. To seek your face through your word and conversation with You. We thank you for the power you have given us to keep on the new and live authentic Christian lives for Your glory. Amen

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. Colossians 1:9
