Aliens Among Us

Standard

“Cross your fingers!”, he said.  “Oh,I’ll do more than that”, I explained, “I’ll pray about it.”  Silence and an awkward laugh lead the way to the next topic.

Sometimes, I forget I am a foreigner in this world.  A resident of another place with only a temporary address on this planet.  I get the “look” more often than not.   All I have to do is drive up in GODCHICK, mention church, bible study, prayer, etc. and there it is.  It can be like telling someone you just got over the swine flu!  They slowly back away.

In 1 Peter 2:11, it even calls us, “aliens and strangers in this world.”  God knew we would feel like this.  He created us to long for Him.  This is not our home.  Our place is with Him.  We will only find satisfaction and contentment when we are with our Father in Heaven.

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.  Hebrews 11:13-16

Do you feel like an alien when: you find peace in a stressful situation? Love where there was once resentment? Comfort where there should be pain? Trust during trails or pray instead of crossing your fingers?  We may not have green skin or computer chips in our heads, but all these things can make you feel or seem foreign to others. Be proud of your foreign/heavenly heritage.  Take rest in knowing we will never be satisfied here.  God has “set eternity in the hearts of men” (Ecc. 3:11).

Our hearts will always long for Heaven while we are here, but we have a loving God.  I believe He offers us glimpses of eternal life.  Wouldn’t you agree that we get a little taste of Heaven when we hold a newborn baby, see the delight in a child’s eyes, a beautiful sunset or a hug from someone we love?

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. Ecclesiastes 3:11-12
